The 25 Biggest Celeb Scandals Since 1982 - part 7

ROSIE QUITS THE VIEW

O'Donnell's reign over The View ended exactly the way it should have: in a split-screen shout-off with conservative cohost Elisabeth Hasselbeck. The impassioned, uncomfortable, please-go-to-commercial-now tiff embodied everything that made O'Donnell's stay on the chatfest so riveting. For nine ratings-boosting months, the former Queen of Nice unveiled a new TV persona — now with 50 percent more liberal outrage! She feuded with The Donald, criticized national institutions from the White House to American Idol, openly discussed her gay marriage, and even held a hungover Danny DeVito on her lap.

CAREER IMPACT: POSITIVE After the blowup, O'Donnell — who had already given notice — quit three weeks early. The ongoing and intense speculation over her next move demonstrates that even an angry Rosie is an in-demand Rosie.

COURTNEY LOVE'S BABY SHOCKER

Choosing a favorite Courtney Love scandal moment is kind of like picking your favorite Beatles record: So...many... choices! Must...stay...focused! But there is one moment Love-ologists find universally shocking. After a 1992 Vanity Fair article suggested she was knowingly using heroin while pregnant, Love denied it, insisting that she sought medical help and quit as soon as she found out. Three years later, she told Barbara Walters she only used in the first month of pregnancy.

CAREER IMPACT: MINOR On April 12, 1994 — four days after her husband, Kurt Cobain, was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound — Love's band Hole released their most successful album to date, Live Through This. Today, Frances Bean is a healthy 15-year-old, but her mom (who hasn't released a new album since 2004) gets more attention for her yo-yo-ing weight than her music career.

Luciano Pavarotti has died

The legendary Luciano Pavarotti passed away on September 6, 5 am, at home in Modena, Italy. The opera tenor singer had pancreatic cancer since July 2006. After a surgical operation, he was reported to be in the mend but retired from making public appearances. Pavarotti took a turn for the worst when he was admitted into hospital this summer. There were press releases to forewarn the public of the imminient fatality of his illness.
Pavarotti was a pioneer in innovations. He successfully staged concerts with contemporary rockers like Elton John, Sting and Bono in the 1990s. He was one of the few singers who really took care of his vocal cords and they served him well into his advanced middle age. To the “King of the High Cs” - bon voyage.
Luciano Pavarotti (October 12, 1935 – September 6, 2007) was an Italian tenor and one of the most popular contemporary vocal performers in the world of opera and across multiple musical genres. Known for his televised concerts, and as one of the Three Tenors, Pavarotti was also noted for his award-winning charity work for raising money on behalf of refugees and the Red Cross.

ROB LOWE: SEX-TAPE PIONEER

During the 1988 Democratic convention in Atlanta, Rob Lowe picked up two gals (ages 22 and 16) at a club, invited them back to his hotel, and videotaped the romp. Naturally, the home movie leaked out — and grainy footage of the Brat Packer in action made the tabloid-TV rounds. The underage girl's mom sued Lowe, but it was settled out of court, and no charges were filed. (He agreed to perform 20 hours of community service.)

CAREER IMPACT: MINOR After a brief rehab stint for alcohol addiction in 1990, the star went on to wink at the incident in his work, including the 1999 West Wing pilot — in which his character, a presidential aide, unwittingly sleeps with a hooker. As Lowe noted in 2000, ''At the height of my downfall, I was still making a million bucks a picture.''

Shocking, funny, weird, strange and kinky sex customs of the world

  • Most Middle Eastern countries recognize the following Islamic law: "After having sexual relations with a lamb, it is a mortal sin to eat its flesh."
  • In Lebanon, men are legally allowed to have sex with animals, but the animals must be female. Having sexual relations with a male animal is punishable by death.
  • In Bahrain, a male doctor may legally examine a woman's genitals, but is forbidden from looking directly at them during the examination. He may only see their reflection in a mirror.
  • Former circumcision rites of the Bala tribe of Zaire once required the excised foreskin of a young boy to be wrapped in a banana leaf and placed on a termite hill to be eaten. The boy's father kept vigil at the spot until all remains were eaten; failure to do otherwise was thought to cause the boy to later become impotent.
  • Young Lenge girls of East Africa were required to be deflowered by a phallus [penis] made of horn as part of their ceremonial puberty rights.
  • In Polynesia, adolescents of both sexes are instructed in sexual techniques by an older experienced person, and during this period, it is permissible to have numerous sexual liasons before settling down to married life. Special "pleasure houses" are built to provide young people with their own place to socialize and have intercourse.
  • In Kafa in southwestern Ethiopia, a man found guilty of violating a virgin may be punished by having his head or hands cut off.
  • The most common universal form of marriage is polygyny (one husband with two or more wives). Anthropologist George Murdock's Ethnographic Atlas claims that of 849 societies, 70 percent were polygynous. Polygyny may not be as widely practiced today as it once was because of the prohibitive cost of keeping more than one wife.
  • The inhabitants of the Trobriand Islands [South Pacific] are reported to be the most sexually uninhibited and free among all known societies. Children are allowed to indulge in any type of sexual play, with intercourse occurring at an early age. All aspects of sex are considered natural, and adults and children alike are given free reign of their sexual desires.
  • The vocabulary of Polynesian [South Pacific] societies have no words in their language for "obscene", "indecent", or "impure". Sex is never considered a source of shame or embarrassment.
  • In some Islamic countries women may be executed for committing adultery, though traditionally, men receive only a light punishment. In Saudi Arabia, adultery is a capital offense punishable by death from stoning.
  • The inhabitants of Tonga [South Pacific] allow premarital intercourse with permission of the girl's parents and the provision that conception won't occur. Should pregnancy result, the offending couple must walk around the village naked for several days and apply a magic potion to the fence surrounding the community to prevent disease from infecting the population.
  • At one time, specially selected male children among the Alaskan Koniag were raised as females from infancy, eventually becoming the wife of a chief or tribal leader. A similar custom of aboriginal tribes in Greenland designate this person an Achnutshik.
  • Homosexuality is an accepted practice among the South American Lache and Caquiteros. Homosexual marriages are not uncommon; moreover, women who have borne five sons are permitted to raise one of them as a female.
  • Seven times a year, on a holiday called Pon, INDONESIANS make a pilgrimage to a sacred mountain on Java for a ceremony of good fortune through sex. To receive blessings, they spend the night having sex with someone other than their spouse. Their wishes will be fulfilled only if they sleep with that person all seven times.
  • And in HAITI, each July, voodoo practitioners journey to the waterfalls of Saut d'Eau to worship the goddess of love. Things get racy when you mix the love goddess with a bunch of naked bodies writhing around in the mud (below). The ritual even includes the blood of sacrificed animals--cow and goat heads are thrown into the mix.
  • INDIAIS first and only phone-sex line was so popular--it was driving users into debt--that the government actually shut it down. "People were on so long it cost them $25 a call," says sexologist Dr. Shirish Malde. The average salary in India is $200 a month. "It was a dangerous addiction."
  • This past June, nearly two dozen nurses and undertakers in Turin, ITALY, were arrested for having, sex among the coffins and refrigerated cabinets of a mortuary. Apparently, embalming fluid is a new pheromone.
  • 41 percent of FRENCH men and women have participated in an, orgy, and 27 percent of them have engaged in partner swapping. The French also give and receive the most fellatio
  • For $15 a year, anybody in Medellin, COLOMBIA, can be a porn star. Members of the organization Club Stop spend their weekends "acting" in amateur porn movies, which are then sold locally. The quality of the movies is low, but demand is high.

The 25 Biggest Celeb Scandals Since 1982 - part 4

O.J.'S FAKE TELL-ALL GOES BUST

On Nov. 14, 2006, Fox announced a two-part interview with O.J. Simpson, tied to the release of If I Did It, a fictional tell-all that HarperCollins exec Judith Regan gave Simpson a hefty fee to write — about the hypothetical details of how the ex-football great might have killed Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman. Within the week, a wave of protests from Fox affiliates, the victims' families, and a disgusted public drove News Corp. (parent company of Fox and HarperCollins) to cancel the bizarre endeavor.

CAREER IMPACT: MAJOR Regan was fired on Dec. 15. Meanwhile, a judge awarded the book rights to Goldman's family to help satisfy their $33.5 million civil-suit decision against Simpson, and on Aug. 14, Beaufort Books announced a deal with the family to publish the totally made-up tale: It's due out Oct. 3.
